Some days, body wash is enough. Other days, skin starts to feel a little rough, especially on arms, legs, and anywhere that tends to get dry faster. That’s when I reach for a sugar scrub.
A good sugar scrub does more than just buff the surface of the skin. It helps lift away that dull, dry buildup that can make skin feel uneven, and it leaves everything feeling smoother afterward. With our Lantern & Veil cleansing sugar scrubs, we wanted that fresh, polished feel without the heavy, oily residue some scrubs leave behind.
Why We Chose Sugar
When I was working on this scrub, I had a few friends try it before I finalized the formula. The feedback I kept hearing was that they liked how the sugar softened as they used it and that their skin felt smooth afterward without that overly slick, heavy finish some scrubs leave behind.
That lined up with exactly what I wanted.
We chose sugar over a harsher exfoliant for a simple reason: sugar crystals have naturally rounded edges, and they dissolve easily in water. That means the scrub starts with a more noticeable exfoliating feel, then gradually softens as you work it over damp skin. It’s a gentler kind of polish, and in the shower, that makes a difference.
What a Cleansing Sugar Scrub Actually Does
Our Lantern & Veil cleansing sugar scrubs are made with a whipped soap base and added hemp seed oil, so they cleanse and exfoliate in one step.
That part matters. Some scrubs are mostly oil, which can feel nice, but they do not always give you that clean rinse-off. We wanted something that would still feel rich and creamy in use while also washing away cleanly. The whipped soap base helps lift away the day’s buildup, while the sugar smooths the skin’s surface as you massage it in.
The hemp seed oil helps soften the after-feel, so skin feels comfortable when you rinse off instead of stripped. You still get that freshly scrubbed feeling, just without turning your shower into a slippery mess.
How Skin Feels Afterward
The biggest difference is texture. After using a sugar scrub, skin usually feels smoother right away, especially in places that tend to get rough or flaky. Lotion also tends to go on more evenly afterward, which is one of the reasons I like using a scrub before applying body moisturizer.
Still, more is not better here. For most people, once or twice a week is plenty. More than that can start to feel like too much, especially on dry or reactive skin. A scrub should leave skin feeling refreshed, not overworked.
Why We Make Ours This Way
At Lantern & Veil, we make our cleansing sugar scrubs to be practical as much as they are enjoyable. We want them to feel like an easy upgrade to an everyday shower, not an extra step you have to talk yourself into.
So yes, a sugar scrub helps smooth the skin. But for us, it’s also about the experience of using it: the creamy texture, the gentle polish, the clean rinse, and that moment when your skin feels fresh again and your shower feels a little less rushed.
That’s the version we wanted to make. And that’s still the point of it now.
